Cyprus’ fascinating capital city, Nicosia (Lefkosia), is the only divided capital in the world: the north is Turkish and the south belongs to Greece. This is the result of a long and intriguing history, much of which is to be discovered as you roam the city’s streets.
The older, medieval part of the city was once enclosed by walls that run three and a half miles long. Here you will find beautiful gothic architecture and unmissable historic sites such as the ancient Famagusta Gate.
The rest of the city, just outside these walls, is a contemporary one. Filled with colonial buildings and houses it is also the new cultural and business centre. Most of Nicosia’s nightlife is to be found around the Famagusta Gate.
Old Nicosia is home to an endless array of museums, historical sites, monuments and craft centres. Here you will also find pedestrian-only shopping streets and cozy cafes to help you while away an afternoon.
This is definitely the city to visit if you are looking to experience some of Cyprus’ rich culture and history. Nicosia lies roughly at the centre of the island and is easily accessible from other resorts.
